Guwahatians May Face Water Shortage as GMC Workers Threaten to Stop Supply

Guwahati: Citizens of Guwahati might face water shortage, as well as garbage clearance issues from January 27 as hundreds of workers of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), has threatened to stop work and stop the supply of water to Guwahati residents indefinitely.

It needs to mentioned here that many households and residential societies are dependent on water supplied by GMC.

Chandan Sharma, Convenor of the five municipal workers' unions said that if their six demands are not met, they would be forced to stop water supply as a pressure tactic.

The workers have been demanding regularisation of all those who are working on contract, timely payment of pension and payment of Provident Fund (PF) dues, supplying clean and round the clock water to Guwahati residents among other demands.

The striking workers are now demanding intervention of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and his officials.

The six demands of the workers of GMC includes-

1. Regularisation of all those workers who are working on a contract basis.

2. Timely payment of pension. 

3. Supplying clean and purified water and arranging better street lights for the residents of Guwahati.

4. To make payments of Provident Fund (PF) dues, and Employees Provident Fund (EPF).

5. Promotion of the employees, and

6. Payment of pension as a grant from the state Govt.

Speaking to The Sentinel Chandan Sharma said, "We expect the intervention of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in this matter, and hope soon the Assam government will fulfil our demands otherwise it might create problems for the Guwahatians as we will hold Indefinite strike from January 27 which will leave the city dirty that can cause infections and diseases, and people can face garbage clearance issues and many other issues."

As many as 2700 GMC workers came together to stage the protest, and the strike was supported by all the five municipal workers' organisations.
