Guwahati's Maligaon Foot Over-Bridge To Be Demolished Within One Month

GUWAHATI: With the objective of carrying out the construction of the Kamakhya-Maligaon flyover in a smooth manner, the government has taken the decision to demolish the Maligaon foot over-bridge within one month.

Sources at the public works department (PWD) said on Friday that the authority has finalised the decision of taking down the foot over-bridge so that the construction of the Kamakhya-Maligaon flyover smoothly. The bridge, if exists, will be an obstruction in the process of construction, sources said. The Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has also confirmed the same.

A meeting was held between PWD and GMDA officials in Guwahati on Thursday in which various aspects related to the demolition of the Maligaon foot over-bridge and construction of the new flyover was discussed in details. The Maligaon foot over-bridge was revamped three years ago in 2018. An Assam-based company had done the work of the strengthening of the structure (over-bridge), while a Mumbai-based company had done the work of adding two lifts in the bridge.

The PWD will have to pay an amount of money to the companies (which had done renovation works of the bridge) and to the GMDA. The bridge will be destroyed once the issue related to the payment (which is to be made by the PWD) gets resolved.

Guwahati, the biggest city and the capital of Assam, has several flyovers. The government has been making various efforts like building flyovers in different corners of the city to resolve the perennial problem of traffic snarls, but the issue has apparently remained unsolved till date.
