GUWAHATI: In a major breakthrough, Guwahati Police could arrest the four persons out of five who allegedly murdered an elderly man in the wee hours while he was heading to the mosque on July 27 at Friends Path in Hatigaon. The deceased was identified as Javed Ali Ahmed (75), a retired additional chief engineer in Irrigation Department. The main motive for the murder was property dispute.

The four accused have been identified as Ainal Haque (31), Hasmat Miya (39), Mahibul Khan (28), and Nur Mahmad alias Boga (27), all hailing from Barpeta. A relative of the deceased contracted these four to murder Javed Ali and also gave them a payment of Rs 8 lakh to execute the plan.

In this connection, Police Commissioner, Guwahati, Diganta Barah said in front of the media, “Four people have been arrested in connection to the murder of Javed Ali Ahmed. The main motive of the murder is of property issues. And these four accused were hired for Rs 8 lakh by a relative of the deceased. The deceased also have ancestral property in Mondia apart from Hatigaon. Along with the relative all four accused were staying at the Hotel Good Luck Residency for five days before they committed the crime. They were observing the target when he comes and goes for his prayer. On the fifth day i.e. July 27, three of them came in a car, and other two Mahibul Khan and Nur Mahmad followed Ahmed. First, they hit Ahmed with the car. As soon as the deceased fell to the ground, Ainal Haque and Hasmat Miya who were in the car started hitting him with an iron rod and a hoe (tiller) respectively. As a result, the victim succumbed to the injuries. After committing the crime, they all left Guwahati for Barpeta.”

The police have identified the relative, who was involved in the murder, but have not disclosed his identity as he is still on the run.

While investigating, the police also seized mobile phones along with the SIM cards of the accused persons, which were used during the time of the commission of the offence; the photo identities of two accused persons; relevant CCTV footage of the hotel where the accused people were staying for those four days; CCTV footage of the area in and around the mosque; and one iron road and the hoe, which were used in committing the crime.
