GUWAHATI: The All Assam Trained Home Guard Association (AATHGA) and the All Assam Griha Rakshi Volunteers' Welfare Association (AAGRVWA) are going to stage a joint indefinite cease-work from March 18 onwards.

The two organizations made this known at a press meet here on Monday. Addressing the press, AATHGA president Kamakhya Das said, "In response to the cease-work staged on March 1 and 2 by our personnel, the State Home department on March 5 called us to discuss our demands. However, on March 4 the department sent us a cancellation letter of the discussion. This shows the negligence of the government towards us. So, in response to it 27,000 home guards will go for an indefinite cease-work from March 18 from 6 am onwards."

Das further said, "The government announced financial assistance of Rs 50 lakh for the next of kin of two home guards who died during the Covid-19 duty, but till now the announcement has not been implemented."

The home guard employees demand the government to amend the present Assam Home Guard Act, 1947 to provincialize their posts. Other demands of the association include salary on the basis of the order issued by the Supreme Court and to stop the online deployment software system.

The associations said that 27,000 home guards will boycott the duties of the Assam Legislative Assembly election but they will cast their votes to the eligible party in the upcoming poll.
