GUWAHATI: In the absence of a scientific system for distinguishing marks obtained by students qualifying the HS examinations from the CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) and the AHSEC (Assam Higher Secondary Education Council) the students of the Council are being discriminated upon, said the SFI (Students' Federation of India).

Addressing the media here on Sunday, State SFI general secretary Nirangkush Nath said, "Even though HS courses under the CBSE and the AHSEC are one and the same, there are differences between the two in giving credit to students during evaluation. CBSE students generally score more marks and it has much to do with their system of evaluation. The universities in the State should have a scientific system to find cut-off marks between CBSE-passed and AHSEC-passed HS students for their admission in degree courses in the State or there should have been reservation of seats for HS-passed students from the Council. In the absence of such a device, HS-passed Council's students are being discriminated upon during admission. "This apart, most of HS-passed CBSE students opt to go outside the State for admission in degree courses. However, this time around most of them are set to continue their studies in Assam because of COVID-19 pandemic. It is a common scene that most of the students in the merit list for admission in degree colleges with 75-100% marks are from the CBSE."

The SFI is going to stage a protest on August 18 in the State in protest against, what it says, discrimination upon the students of AHSEC.
