GUWAHATI:  The almost five-day-long celebration of Durga Puja came to an end on Tuesday with the immersion of the idols in water bodies all around the country. The same was conducted in the capital city of Assam which saw about 500 small and major Durga Puja celebrations.

The Kachomari Ghat in the Fancy Bazar locality of the city and the Pandu Port Ghat in Pandu saw the largest number of idol immersions owing to the large number of Durga Puja celebrations in the vicinity of these ghats and the considerable ease of handling crowds at these locations. Thousand of devotees and onlookers assembled at these ghats marked by the authorities to view the immersion of idols.

Apart from the Kachomari Ghat and the Pandu Port Ghat, immersion of Durga Puja idols was also carried out at seven other ghats across the city. These were the Sunsali Ghat, Digaru Ghat, Chandrapur, Basistha Ghat, Saukuchi Ghat, Major-baha Ghat and Dharapur. The district administration along with the police administration had already fixed routes for the vehicles and public moving towards the ghats. Volunteers and police personnel were deployed to ensure smooth movement and prevent any untoward incident during the whole event.

Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were also deployed along with rubber boats near the ghats to mount immediate rescue measures in case of any unforeseen incident while officials from different sections of the district administration ensured that the devotees carried out the process in a proper manner. Similar actions were also taken in other parts of the state as well.

The Durga Puja celebrations began on Friday. On this day ‘Akaal Bodhon’ or the evocation of the Goddess Durga idol was done, which also includes the unveiling of the face of the idols to be displayed for puja. According to popular belief, on this day, Goddess Durga comes to her father’s house with her children. After the final round of pujas are conducted on Dashami, which fell on Tuesday this year and the completion of the celebrations, the idols used for the puja celebrations over the past few days were removed from the pedestal and moved towards the allocated ghats for emersion. A large number of devotees accompanied the vehicles which carried the idols along the designated routes through the city. The district administration had already issued a set of regulations for traffic as well as public movement on the day to ensure that the immersion of the idols is conducted safely.
