GUWAHATI: Incessant rains since Monday night resulted in waterlogging in almost all places of Guwahati. Flash floods brought life to a standstill in the city.

Vehicles, including school buses, were stranded for hours on the flooded roads of the city. Water also entered many houses, forcing people to recolate to safer places.

Some of the adversely affected areas are Zoo Road, RG Baruah Road, GS Road, Nabin Nagar, Anil Nagar, Hatigaon, Ganeshguri, Lachit Nagar, Tarun Nagar, VIP Road, Rajgarh Road, Chandmari, Rukminigaon, Ulubari and Geetanagar. The approach road of the Guwahati railway station was also submerged. Student of Guwahati Commerce College had to appear for their exams by wading knee-deep water in the college campus. The Geetanagar Police Station was also flooded.

Three boats of the SDRF and NDRF have been stationed in Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar and Hatigaon to rescue stranded people, especially aged people and students. Flood-affected people have been shifted to a rescue camp started in a school in Bhangagarh. NDRF and SDRF personnel were seen distributing fruits, drinking water, candles, biscuits and other items to those whose homes had been flooded.

According to the flood report issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), there are 617 people in rescue camps in Kamrup (metro) district.

Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Commissioner Devashish Sharma, Circle Officers and district administration were seen overseeing the relief and rescue operations in the city throughout the day. On the other hand, Ram Prasad Banikya, resident of Anil Nagar, passed away on Monday night. On Tuesday, GMC Commissioner Devashish Sharma ensured that a mortuary van was brought to the flooded area to carry his body to the Ulubari crematorium for the last rites.

Meanwhile, dewatering pumps are operating continuously at Bharalumukh Pumping Station and storm water is also flowing through Bharalumukh sluice gate.
