GUWAHATI: An NGO moved State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu with the plea for the inclusion of physical education and sports as a faculty in educational curriculum at all levels.
To back up its plea, the NGO – Touch of Humanity – said that the physical education committee had been set up for the first time in India way back in 1948. It further said that the first Asian Games was organized in Delhi in 1951 to popularize physical education and sports among the Indian youths. The NGO, however, said that physical education and sports are not getting due importance in the education system in Assam, and it has not been considered as an academic subject at all levels of curriculum in the State to date.
The NGO said that through its New Education Policy the Central Government is going to incorporate physical education and sports as a subject in the educational curriculum. However, education being a state subject behoves the State government to ensure its inclusion in the curricula at all levels.
The NGO said that physical education and sports have been included as a subject in the CBSE, IPSC, ICICE etc boards. Enumerating a few virtues of physical education and sports as a subject in educational curricula, the NGO said that besides employment generation such a move will help achieve the eradication of poverty, ensure good health and well-being, inclusive and equitable quality education and promote life-long learning opportunities for all, etc.
