 GUWAHATI: An Indian National Science Academy (INSA) lecture series was hosted by the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at Cotton University (CU) on Thursday. Renowned plant pathologist and Professor Emeritus, University of California, Berkeley, USA Prof. Steven E. Lindow, who is currently visiting India as the INSA Prof. B P Pal Chair Awardee, delivered the lecture on 'Understanding microbial life on leaves'.

Prof. Lindow, who has an illustrious career spanning more than 45 years at the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology, University of California, Berkeley, is celebrated for his seminal work on ice-forming plant bacteria and for using bacteria to prevent the russeting of fruits. The lecture explored the complex lifestyle adaptation patterns of microbes on leaf surfaces, which have explicit and long-lasting effects on plant health, agriculture, and the environment. He also spoke about his groundbreaking research on how ice-forming plant bacteria can be used to produce artificial rain and snow to combat climate change.

The event was marked by the presence of Prof. Ramesh Chandra Deka, Vice-Chancellor, Cotton University, Prof. Ranjan Tamuli, IITG, alongside Prof. Eeshan Kalita, Head, Department of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology, and faculty coordinators Dr. Ajanita Mazumdar and Dr. N Nirjanta Devi, among other faculty members and students, stated a press release.
