GUWAHATI: The Sadou Asom Goria-Moria-Deshi Jatiya Parishad (SAGMDJP), an indigenous Assamese Muslim body has threatened the government to conduct a separate survey before the code of conduct is imposed for the forthcoming Assembly elections.
The survey will focus to determine the indigenous Muslim population in the State along with their socio-economic conditions.
In this regard, the body's president Shahnawaz Hussain and general secretary Akhtar Hussain underlined that the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) in its last election manifesto mentioned about the conduction of the survey for the Goria, Moria, and Deshi communities. "After the elections, the BJP again assured to conduct the separate survey and also the formation of a corporation for the communities. Minority Development Minister Ranjit Dutta also gave a similar assurance to conduct the survey after discussions with the communities," the SAGMDJP stated.
President Shahnawaz Hussain pointed out that in the last budget session, Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma allotted Rs 100 crore to set up a corporation to conduct the survey. However, till date no initiative has been taken.
Further, the SAGMDJP threatened that they will stage protests if the survey is not conducted before the code of conduct comes into force.
