GUWAHATI: Assam
State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) observed the International Day for
Disaster Reduction (IDDR) on Wednesday across the State through a video
conferencing with all the Deputy Commissioners and DDMAs of 33 districts. The
video conferencing was aimed to commemorate and discuss on an important issue
during any disaster which is - Reducing loss of precious lives. This year's
IDDR theme is focused on measures for local level Disaster Risk Reduction.
The video conference was initiated by a welcome speech from MS Manivannan, Commissioner Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, ASDMA followed by a short presentation on the issue of rising of death rate during flood and other disasters like storm and lightning. This year 123 deaths have been reported across the State due to flood, which is a serious cause of concern for everyone. Manivannan emphasized on this issue and discussed about the likely solutions for the same. The districts with high rate of death have also discussed the probable reasons for increasing death rate in those respective districts for which they suggest for proper awareness generation among masses.
Manivannan also requested all the DDMAs to take the necessary actions for the region specific awareness programmes for reducing the death rate before the next flood season.
The programme was also attended by Dhiraj Saud, State Project coordinator, ASDMA, the officials of ASDMA and District Project Officers of DDMAs.
