‘International Day of Older Persons’ observed in Guwahati

GUWAHATI, Oct 1: HelpAge India observed ‘International Day of Older Persons’ with the theme, “Universal Pensions for Senior Citizens” here on Monday. The programme was attended by hundreds of senior citizens from different locations of Guwahati and North Lakhimpur.

In his welcome address, HelpAge India State Head Programmes (Northeast) Nilondra Tanya highlighted on old age pension, disability pension and widow pension. He also explained the objective of the formation of Pension Parishad which has been instrumental in its campaign for universal pensions. Tanya further observed that the respective states willing to disburse more pensions need financing from the Centre. In his presidential address, All Assam Senior Citizens’ Society president Monorajan Sharma said that the Government of Assam should periodically hold consultative meeting with the senior citizens’ associations to understand the problems faced by the senior citizens.
