GUWAHATI: Guwahati, along with the rest of the world celebrated the International Day of Yoga with full enthusiasm on Monday.

The idea of International Yoga Day was conceived by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who proposed the concept of Yoga on September 27, 2014. Later, the resolution to adopt June 21 as International Yoga Day was introduced in the UN by India's Ambassador and it received support from 177 nations, the highest number for any UN resolutions.

The theme of International Day of Yoga-2021 was 'Yoga for Wellness'. The Central message for this year was 'Be with Yoga, Be at Home'.

On the occasion, State BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) organized a Yoga programme at its party headquarters here. State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass, among several leaders took part in the programme.

Meanwhile, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) organized a yoga session under the guidance of GMC Commissioner Devashis Sharma from 7 am at the GMC Community Hall.

The officers and staff observed the day by practising Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) for 45 minutes from 7 am.

To showcase the fruitful benefits about our country's ancient form of health science, and its importance in this time of pandemic, the Regional Outreach Bureau (ROB) Guwahati, organized a webinar on 'Yogic way of Immunity Building for COVID-19'. The webinar highlighted how yoga proves to be useful in providing accessible means to achieve mental as well as physical well-being.

More than 40 participants joined the webinar. Senior officers of regional and field units of Ministry of Information & Broadcasting were present in the webinar.

Gauhati University (GU) NSS Cell in association with Vivekananda Kendra, Guwahati branch celebrated the day through a webinar on the theme 'Yoga for well-being' focussing on 'Yoga at Home, Yoga with Family'.

Inaugurating the webinar, Professor Pratap Jyoti Handique, Vice-Chancellor, GU said that yoga is an important component of Indian civilization and a part of our culture and heritage. Professor Handique said that regular yoga practice increases our physical and mental fitness which has become extremely important in the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

Earlier welcoming the guest and participants, Dr Ranjan Kr. Kakati, Director, Students' Welfare and Programme Coordinator, NSS Cell, GU said that Yoga unites the body, mind and soul which help in leading a healthy life and urged all the volunteers for a regular practice of yoga.

Modern English School celebrated the 7TH International Yoga Day with great enthusiasm. The students of class VIII C took the responsibility to observe the Yoga Day. The celebration started on a virtual platform by the students. Students displayed artwork and delivered speeches on the occasion.
