GUWAHATI: The Indigenous Tribal Sahitya Sabha, Assam (ITSSA) has questioned the State government as to why it has not sent a proposal to the Centre seeking a permanent solution for the floods.

In a statement, ITSSA president Govind Tait and secretary general Kamalakanta Musahary said it is unfortunate that the floods have affected lakhs of people and many lost their lives. But, despite the worsening situation, the Assam government has failed to provide assistance to the affected people.

The ITSSA said that it has been a long-standing demand of various organizations of the State to declare Assam floods as a national issue. "Organizations had demanded that funds should be allotted in the budget to address the floods' issue. But in the last six years, the BJP-led Central government has not taken any initiative," the body underlined.

It further said that, a team of ITSSA on August 1, 2019 met Home Minister AmitShah and submitted a memorandum to announce Assam floods as a national issue. The team demanded inclusion of Rs 10,000-crore assistance every year in the Union Budget to tackle the flood situation. As said by the ITSSA, the Home Minister on August 16 wrote to the Assam government asking a proposal about the flood situation but the State Water Resource Department till date has not sent any proposal.

"It is an unfortunate situation for the people of the State. We demand that amid the corona pandemic, the flood-affected people are not neglected," the ITSSA asserted.

The body stressed that the corona pandemic has increased in the State as the people have not followed the health advisory to contain the spread.

"It is important for everyone to be aware of the corona situation or Assam will become a valley of death," said the ITSSA.
