JACRU moves CM for intervention to save Hindustan Paper Corporation

GUWAHATI: The Joint Action Committee of Recognised Unions (JACRU) of the two paper mills in Assam submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister for immediate intervention at the NCLT before September 14 to save Hindustan Paper Corporation (HPC) Ltd from being liquidated.

Chakraborty said the NCLT, at a hearing held over the paper mills' issue on August 26, ordered that the government has to submit a plan for revival of the two mills within September 14, which is the next date of hearing.

It is to be noted that the mills, Cachar Paper Mill at Panchgram in Hailakandi district and Nagaon Paper Mill at Jagiroad in Morigaon district, have been lying non-functional since October, 2015 and March, 2017 respectively.

The memorandum stated that the Kerala Government has already proposed to take over Hindustan News Print Ltd, (A subsidiary unit of HPC) to protect industries and employment in their State. The Government of Assam also has same rights and opportunities to take over both the Giant Paper Industries of Assam and save the industries and employment of two lakh youths, the JACRU stated.

The memorandum highlighted that a private party from Assam expressed interest to run the Industries if old liabilities towards salaries and statutory dues are settled by the Government.

"The Government of Assam and Government of India should take steps prior to September 14 and submit their interest to NCLT to save the industries of Assam. State government should immediately take up with Centre or it may alone move to tribunal as like as Kerala Government," the JACRU asserted.

Further, it stated that the people of Assam deserve revival of industries for employment of their children. 69 workers have already died and the government should save the lives of the other workers by releasing their wages and dues, the JACTU stated.
