GUWAHATI: For the family members of 93-year-old Jibini Devi Baid who has been discharged from Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) after she tested COVID-19 negative, it is a miracle as well strong will that resulted in victory of the grand old lady in her battle against the dangerous virus.
Jibini Devi Baid is so far the oldest patient in Assam to recover after tested COVID positive. She is also among few nonagenarians (aged 90-99) in India to defeat the dangerous virus.
"When I saw my grandmother (Jibini Devi Baid) came out from the GMCH on Thursday, I could not believe my eyes. Doctors and experts across the world have been saying that elderly and older people are most vulnerable to coronavirus and fatality rate among them is the highest. So, when my grandmother was tested COVID positive on July 4, majority of family members had lost hopes about her recovery. But my grandma was calm, composed and strong. She was ready to go to the hospital," Manish Baid, grandson of Jibini Devi told The Sentinel on Friday.
The development has emerged as silver lining amidst overwhelming gloom in the State due to alarming rise in the number of COVID positive cases.
"Along with my grandmother my father CR Baid (70) and three of our caretakers at home at Shakigarh Path near Bhangargarh in the city tested positive on July 4. My father was discharged from GMCH on July 11 after he was tested negative. After his discharge my father was crying that he had left my grandma at the hospital and did not know about her fate. But doctors at GMCH particularly the hospital superintendent Dr Abhijit Sharma assured us that my grandmother will recover and go back home soon," Manish said.
"At times, we get the opportunity to smile amid adversity too! Guwahati's 93-yr-old Mrs. Jibini Devi Baid was discharged from GMCH after having firmly defeated #coronavirus. An incredible story also of competence of our doctors who handled this delicate case with the finest precision", Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote in a tweet.
Thanking the GMCH doctors for their care and treatment, Manish said strong will, calm and composed nature of his grandmother must have worked towards strengthening her immune system to defeat the virus. "Going by the present scenario COVID can infect anyone. I can only urge and request people not to become panic and follow all treatment protocols without slightest negligence. If my grandmother could recover at this age (93), why should others afraid?" Manish said.
GMCH Superintendent Dr Abhijit Sharma said "the patient's co-morbid hypertensive state was taken care off and her drowsiness improved during her stay at the hospital. Oxygen saturation was maintained by oxygen supplementation."
