Jorhat Municipal Board Scam: Director of Municipal Administration ordered to take action

GUWAHATI: The Additional Secretary for the Department of Housing & Urban Affairs of the Government of Assam has written to the Director of Municipal Administration for the state, to take appropriate action regarding the petition filed by Diganta Saikia, President Amguri Nabanirman Samitee, Sivsagar regarding the embezzlement of funds at the Jorhat Municipal Board. He also requested the director to submit a report regarding the actions taken and the petition was forwarded by the Prime Minister’s Office.

Previously, The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has written to the Chief Secretary of Assam to take appropriate action regarding the alleged embezzlement of funds by the Jorhat Municipal Board (JMB), as per the letter of Diganta Saikia.

Earlier, he had approached the Gauhati High Court with PIL No. 20/2021, and a division bench had directed the Assam Government to place the CAG’s (Comptroller and Auditor General) report before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) within eight weeks to verify the contentions raised by him as regards the embezzlement of a large amount of money meant for public purposes. Diganta Saikia said, “Since no information was received from the PAC, I wrote to the Prime Minister’s office and the Union Housing and Urban Affairs to take necessary steps in this regard.”
