STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: In response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Gauhati High Court which sought that special clinics be opened in the State for treatment of patients suffering from post-COVID complications, the State's Health Department has informed the court that the Government has designated the Kalapahar Hospital, which is an annexe to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), as a post-COVID hospital to cater to the needs of such patients.

This submission came during hearing of a PIL filed by one Anjan Nagg, a resident of Dibrugarh. Nagg had moved the court seeking issuance of a directive to the State Government for opening of post-COVID-care clinics.

The counsel for the Health Department informed the court that the Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent of the GMCH, vide an order dated September 2, 2021, had already declared the Kalapahar Hospital as a post-COVID hospital. The counsel further informed the court that the Kalapahar Hospital has special facilities such as oxygen beds and Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The court closed the PIL after this assurance from the Health Department counsel, but stated that "the petitioner will always be at liberty to move an application before this court in case cause of action arises relating to the subject-matter of the present PIL."
