Kamrup, Goalpara to give Xuery and Votheli a miss due to Coronavirus pandemic

GUWAHATI: Coronavirus pandemic has made the people of Kamrup district and parts of Goalpara district cancel their age-old cultural festivals like Xuery and Votheli this time around.
These month-long festivals are observed in Kamrup district and also in a few areas in Goalpara district from Bohag 1 (Assamese calendar) since time immemorial. In Xueri, activities like Srikrishna dadhi-manthan (churning butter from milk) by girls clad-like Braja Gopis are performed. Such melodramatic performances have much to do with the age-old alternative media of Assam.
However, this time around the people of the two districts have to give these two festivals a miss.
Talking to this reporter, a few people related to Xueri and Votheli Utsavs said that as long as their memories serve them, there was no skipping of these two festivals by the community.
