GUWAHATI: In his capacity as Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (M) district and Chairman, District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Pallav Gopal Jha on Monday issued a Notification directing all private hospitals, shopping malls, bars, restaurants, cineplex and other business establishments of Guwahati city which witness congregation of people in large numbers, to submit updated Safety Certificates from the departments concerned to his office within 30 days.

The Notification warned that non-submission of the updated Safety Certificate within the stipulated time would lead to suspension/cancellation of licenses of the defaulting establishments.

The directive came after Deputy Commissioner observed that some private hospitals, shopping malls, pubs, bars, restaurants, cineplex etc., where there is a large congregation of the public, do not maintain the basic minimum safety requirements like fire safety, electric safety and other emergency provisions for tackling any untoward eventuality. Several incidents have happened in recent times due to non-maintenance of these basic safety requirements, leading to loss of life and property.

Jha stated in the Notification that the owners of the establishments also attach the least importance to the safety aspect of the establishments, which makes the patients/attendants/guests/visitors in a vulnerable position. Moreover, the Notification stated, such establishments do not maintain the food safety norms and do not adhere to the provisions of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.
