GUWAHATI: Bringing some much-needed relief to the transgenders' community, The Kamrup (Metro) District Administration handed out a sum of Rs. 1,500 to the community's members who do not have bank accounts in Guwahati, on Friday. A total of 94 transgender people received the amount.

The members of the community have been facing difficulties in earning livelihood after a few days from the imposition of the lockdown. On Friday, people of the transgender community gathered at the Metro District Deputy Commissioner's office seeking assistance. Later, the DC office extended financial assistance to the helpless people. Officials from the DC office informed they distributed cash among those third gender people who do not have bank accounts. On the other hand, Justice Bidhan Baruah, who is the first third gender Judge in Assam, said that according to the 2011 population census, the number of third gender people in Assam was 11,374. The Ministry of Social Justice, Government of India, has taken a welfare scheme to provide financial help to the third gender as well as the LGBT people. According to Justice Barua, the scheme would help to identify more third gender people across the country.
