Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya employees demand Assam government to regularize jobs

GUWAHATI: Teachers and employees of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) staged a protest at the SSA's (Sarva Siksha Abhijan) Kahilipara office here on Monday demanding the government to regularize their jobs and provincialize KGBVs.

The protest was staged under the aegis All Assam KGBV Teachers and Workers' Welfare Association where over 500 people demonstrated. The KGBV workers' union demanded the government to address their demands before polls.

It is to be noted that, there are a total of 81 KGBVs in Assam.

The protesters underlined that the KGBVs were established in 2007 under SSA. However, in the last 15 years, the schools have not been provincialized, the protesters lamented.

"Despite working all these years, we have not received the minimum facilities from the government. There are over 1,000 teachers and employees across the State who are working with a meagre salary. Their jobs should be regularized and their salaries should be provided as per the Assam Service (Revision of Pay) rules," the KGBV workers' association stated.

The protest was also supported by the Sadou Asam Karmachari Parishad (SAKP).

"When State government employees face issues they seek support from the SAKP. If the government expects better service from their employees then they should not be mentally harassed. The KGBV has raised fundamental demands and they are completely legal," said SAKP president Prodeep Dutta.

"Teachers help us to show the correct way. The teachers and employees of the KGBVs have completed a crucial period of their life here. They could have engaged in other employment opportunities. However, they chose to work for the betterment of humans. Now as they have exceeded the age limit to apply for other jobs, it's very important that their jobs are made secured. Their jobs should be regularized with other benefits like CPF (Contributory Provident Fund) so that they are able to work till the age of 60," Dutta added.

Further, Dutta alleged that bureaucrats do not present the problems of the people in front of the government.

"Many times the bureaucrats direct the government towards the wrong side due to which problems arise," Dutta added.
