GUWAHATI: Another case of easy money kidnapping case came to light. Six people have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping of Biswajit Hazarika (32) from Dakshin Rukmininagar, Namghar in the Dispur area. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of Rs 40 lakh and then murdered him. Ajay Kalita (30), the main perpetrator who planned the entire crime, is from Panjabari; Pranab Ranghang (25) from Amguri, Baithalangshu, in Karbi Anglong district, who works as a bouncer; Debajit Deka (26) from Ganesh nagar in the Basistha area, who works as a video editor of a news portal; Sanjay Kumar Bhagat (26) from Berkuchi, Narengi; Paras Chetri(24) years, from Bonda near Forest camp and Mayur Nath (24) from Narengi, three of them works as bouncers.

According to Commissioner of Police, Guwahati Diganta Borah speaking to the media, informant Edhan Chandra Hajarika informed Dispur PS on October 9, 2022 that his son Biswajit Hazarika had not returned home from his workplace, "Ousadh" pharmacy, Six Mile,

On October 14 and 15, 2022, complainant Edhan Hajarika was contacted by an unknown person on WhatsApp using his missing son's number. The person sent one video of his son, kept the location undisclosed, and demanded a ransom of Rs. 40 lakhs through WhatsApp in return for the safe release of his son. On February 9, 2023, the commissioner said that the old parents of the missing boy met him in regards to the investigation of the case. Subsequently, the case was reviewed, and a team was formed with officers from the Crime Branch.

Diganta Borah, in talking to the media, accused Ajay Kalita of having first mooted the idea of kidnapping an easy target to earn money and discussed it with Pranab Ronghang. Ajay Kalita identified the victim as an easy target. The accused thought that the victim belonged to a rich family and that the victim's family also owned the pharmacy "Oushadh.". Ajay Kalita and the victim studied at the same school, "Ankur Seminary." Survey and the accused Ajay Kalita were one year juniors. On October 9, 2022, at about 7:30 p.m., when victim Biswajit Hazarika was returning home from his workplace in a rickshaw, Ajay Kalita and Mayur Nath followed him and stopped the rickshaw near Tangra Satra. Pranab Ranghang, Paras Chetri, Debajit Deka, and Sanjay Kumar Bhagat arrived on the scene in a Bolero and forcibly took the victim into the vehicle.The accused persons took the victim to Amguri, under Nelie PS, Morigaon district, and detained him inside one newly constructed bathroom of the house of Pranab Ranghang. The videos of the victim in confined state were recorded by Debajit Deka, who sent those video clips to the victim's father. The kidnappers kept making ransom demands to the victim's father, but they could not execute their plan of collecting the demanded ransom money.

Ajay Kalita and Pranab Ronghang decided to kill the victim to destroy all evidence of the crime. On the night of October 23, 2022, just the previous night of Diwali, accused Ajay Kalita and Pranab Ranghang brought the victim to the hanging bridge of Gopal Krishna Tea Estate over Killing River under the jurisdiction of Neli Outpost and strangled him by his neck using a plastic rope. While he was still alive, they tied the unconscious victim to a concrete post used for fencing the tea garden, wrapped him up in a large jute sack, and threw him into the Killing River. Neli's outpost recovered the dead body on November 1, 2022.
