GUWAHATI: The Koch Rajbongshi National Convention (KRNC) has demanded the government to immediately create the interim Kamatapur Autonomous Council.
Talking to The Sentinel, KRNC general secretary Biswajit Ray stated, "For all-round development of the Koch Rajbongshis, on September 3, 2020 the Assam Legislative Assembly passed a Bill for the creation of Kamatapur Autonomous Council. Later, the Assam government cabinet decided to create an interim council. But, till date it has not been formed."
The KRNC underlined that the interim council should be formed before February 22.
Ray stressed that according to Section 35 of the Kamatapur Autonomous Council Act, the interim council should be formed with eligible persons from the community who are engaged with the movement.
Lastly, the KRNC appealed to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Phani Bhusan Choudhury to address their issues.
Ray underlined that the report by the Group of Ministers on granting ST status to the community, should be submitted to the Centre. He added that the ST status should be granted to the community before the forthcoming polls.
