GUWAHATI: Former Assam Legislative Assembly speaker Pranab Kumar Gogoi’s was brought to Assam Legislative Assembly on Tuesday morning for the final tribute. Speaker of the Assembly, Hitendra Nath Goswami, opposition leader Debabrata Saikia, Representing Asom Gana Parishad, Phani Bhushan Choudhury, MLA Brindaban Goswami, paid tribute to the octogenarian leader at the premises of the assembly. Later, his body was taken to the Rajiv Bhawan and former CM Tarun Gogoi and other leaders of APCC paid tribute. After the ceremony, the body was taken to his hometown, Sivasagar where his funeral will be held on Wednesday. Various leaders expressed grief over late Gogoi’s demise. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed grief the incident and ordered his chief secretary to perform the last rites with full state-honours.
Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi in a statement said, “Demise of the veteran political leader is a great loss to the socio-political firmament of the state. Pranab Kumar Gogoi throughout his life had contributed immensely to the development of the state. During his long political life and as a minister of the State government, late Gogoi worked for all sections of the people especially the poor and under-privileged. As the former Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly, late Gogoi worked to enrich the values and tenets of parliamentary democracy. His death is an irreparable loss and would create a void. I convey my best heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and pray to God for eternal peace of the departed soul”.
Meanwhile, in a statement on Tuesday, CM Sonowal while expressing his deep condolences, said a value-based political leader throughout his life, the contributions of late Gogoi in different spectrum of life is evident in the state. An honest, matured and upright political leader, late Gogoi always spoke and lived for the rightful interests of the ethnic people of the state. Moreover, as the Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly, late Gogoi always upheld the democratic traditions of the Assembly.
Industries and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said, “Pranab Gogoi was a leader of the masses. As a public representative and speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, he always emphasized on upholding the democratic values and ethos of the Constitution. He was revered by all and his demise is an irreparable loss to the society”.
