GUWAHATI: After failing to get a response from the government, locals of the Barsapara area constructed a road by spending money from their own pockets.

After inaugurating the newly constructed Dr Bhupen Hazarika Path link road to Banabasu Boro path on Friday, the locals wrote a letter to the Chief Minister expressing their despair.

The locals alleged that the construction project for the road was approved twice by the Lok Nirman Bibhag (LNB). However, due to the interference of local MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita and some LNB officials, the work was not started.

The letter written by former Bodo Sahitya Sabha general secretary and local resident Kamala Kanata Mushahary highlighted the issues due to which the residents had to construct the road on their own.

The letter stated that on September 13 and 24 LND Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through two letters approved the project for the construction of the Champak Nagar-Banabasu Boro path via Subash Pally-Barsapara Stadium road. However, the letter was ignored and the 120-meter-long road was excluded from the project.

"Ramendra Narayan Kalita and an engineer from the LND took initiative to repair of another road which was in good condition. Thus, the locals, took initiative on their own and collected Rs 2 lakh. By collecting Rs 3,000 from each household, the road was completed using sand, gravel and stone dust," stated Mushahary.
