GUWAHATI: The Lok Adalat disposed 10,402 cases during the State-level public hearing cases on Saturday. Of these, a total of 5,088 were pending cases while 6,314 were pre-litigation cases. The total settlement amount of all these resolved 11,402 cases is Rs 96.75 crore.

Talking to The Sentinel, ASLSA (Assam State Legal Service Authority) Member Secretary Nayan Shankar Baruah said, "A total of 95,110 pre-litigation cases were taken up, and the settlement amount of the resolved 6,314 cases is approximately Rs 20,30,06,415.

Similarly the settlement amount of the resolved 5,088 pending cases is approximately Rs 76,45,50,065. A total of 16,490 such cases were taken up during the day-long hearings in various Lok Adalats across the districts.

Mentionably, similar exercises were held in April and July this year. In April, the Lok Adalats disposed 4,351 pre-litigation cases and 2,183 pending cases; while in July, a total of 3,780 pre-litigation cases and 1,092 pending cases were resolved.

The NALSA (National Legal Services Authority) has decided to organise the national-level 'Lok Adalats' in view of the huge disposal of cases across the country and also the positive responses from the stakeholders.

Baruah further pointed out, "The 'Lok Adalat' is inexpensive, less cumbersome, and legally practical."
