GUWAHATI,: City Commissioner of Police Diganta Barah informed the members of the press on Monday that Guwahati Police had solved the mystery behind the murder of Anjan Nath, who was shot dead by assailants near the Ganesh Mandir in Khanapara on October 12.

Diganta Barah stated that the murder was plotted by several people, including the victim’s lover Gitashree Sinha, her parents and her lover Saurav Goenka. Saurav Goenka was the one who shot and killed Anjan Nath with the help of other accomplices using a gun smuggled from Bihar. The case was filed by Ajay Nath, the brother of the victim at the Basistha Police Station after the murder following which Basistha P.S Case No. 621/23, under sections 120(B)/302 of IPC, R/W Section 25 (1)(A) and 27 (1)(A) of the Arms Act was registered and investigation into the matter was done.

As per the police statement, the murder was committed by Saurav Goenka on October 12 at around 8.10 PM with the help of the information provided by Gitashree Sinha. Along with Saurav Goenka, aged 25 years and resident of Sluice Gate locality of Bharalumukh, and Gitashree Sinha, aged 29 years and resident of Koinadhora locality of Khanapara, police arrested five other people including Ajit Sinha, aged 57 years, and Jharna Sinha, aged 50 years, who are the parents of Gitashree Sinha, as well as her sister Neha Sinha, aged 27 years.

The two other people arrested are Govind Kumar aged 23 years, of Bhootnath and Arbind Ray aged 48 years, and resident of Kumarpara, both originally belonging to Bihar, in relation to the incident. The police also confiscated one Yamaha MT-15 ABF motorcycle bearing Registration AS 01 EB 3684, one empty cartridge, and six mobile phones.

Saurav Goenka is said to have developed a romantic relationship with Gitashree Sinha while visiting the beauty parlour she worked in, named J Maya and located at ABC, Bhangagarh. She decided to get married to him with the support of her parents. So, both conspired to get rid of Anjan Nath, with whom she was already in a relationship. She was also married and divorced twice before meeting Anjan Nath and has a 6-year-old son from her second marriage. The son reportedly stays with her second husband in Tripura.

After failing in all efforts to separate Anjan Nath and Gitashree Sinha, including possible witchcraft, and understanding her relationship with Saurav Goenka, Gitashree’s mother impressed upon him to eliminate the victim. Initially, they planned to employ a professional for the same but later Saurav Goenka decided to go ahead with the murder by himself and even got himself trained. Saurav Goenka then visited Govind Ray’s home in Bihar’s Samastipur district and arranged one country-made pistol which they purchased with Rs 55,000 and the same was shipped as cargo in a bus traveling from Bihar to ISBT, Guwahati hiding it in a gram-flour bag. The weapon was later kept at Arvind Roy’s house.

Following instructions and regular updates from Gitashree Sinha, the trio kept an eye on the movement of the victim and later on finding the opportunity, shot Anjan Nath dead on October 12. Meanwhile, Gitashree Sinha kept in touch with both the victim and the murderer using separate phone numbers. On the day of the muder, Saurav Goenka first exchanged his own two-wheeler with his friend Manish Sarma’s Yamaha bearing registration No AS 01 EB 3684. Using that motorcycle he started tracking the route taken by Anjan Nath, with the aid of Gitashree Sinha. Gitashree Sinha was participating and cooperating with Saurav Goenka by being in constant contact with him on one phone and by regularly calling the now deceased Anjan Nath on another phone.

Saurav Goenka went to a place near the JCB Showroom, Basistha waited for the victim near a roadside tea stall and later followed him. After locating Anjan Nath near Ganesh Mandir, Khanapara, Saurav Goenka first crossed him, then by taking a U-turn came back near the victim, stopped and from point blank range shot at him with one bullet and fled from the spot through Prison Gate, Hotel Taj, Bhangagarh and thereafter he threw the pistol at Bharalu River at Majhar Road. After committing the murder, he stayed in contact with Gitashree Sinha and her parents, according to the police official.

Although Anjan Nath was shifted to a medical facility soon after the incident, the doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. His brother registered a complaint wherein he had named Gitashree Sinha and her family members as the accused.
