GUWAHATI: The AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) has fired a warning shot, asking the government not to indulge in any conspiracy to construct the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project (LSHEP) ignoring the safety concerns of life and property of people in downstream Assam.

In a statement issued to the press on Wednesday, AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said that the students’ body is not going to accept any decision on the construction of Lower Subansiri dam taken without securing the life and property of people in downstream Assam. “The government has decided to form a special task for with a view to foiling democratic agitations,” the statement issued by the AASU leaders said.

“The life and property of people in downstream Assam will have to be secured through scientific studies. The government cannot thrust any unilateral decision on the dam upon the people in downstream Assam, forcibly. We’re not going to accept any such decision. The government will have to hit a roadblock in the form of a strong democratic agitation for any such decision,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the AASU has cautioned the NHPC (National Hydroelectric Power Corporation) to stay away from hatching any conspiracy to start the construction of the LSHEP, skipping the mandatory safety measures for life and property in downstream Assam.
