GUWAHATI: The 'Mahajoot' has urged the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India to ensure fair and smooth counting of votes in the Assembly polls.

In a memorandum, the Mahajoot requested the Election Commission of India (ECI) to direct all deputy commissioners, SDOs (Civil), Returning Officers of Assam to furnish the 'detailment' (table wise) of officials engaged for counting of votes to all the contesting candidates.

The 'Mahajoot' has also urged the ECI to direct the deputy commissioners, SDOs (Civil), Returning Officers to ensue video recording of all the counting tables and EVM carrying process from the strong room to the counting hall.

"The authorized agents of the contesting candidates may be allowed to be in front of the door of the strong room after it is opened and till the counting process is over," the 'Mahajoot' stated in the memorandum.

Additionally, the 'Mahajoot' has requested the ECI to direct the Returning Officers to furnish the following information to all the contesting candidates –

* Number of postal ballot issued in the constituency.

* Date of issue of postal ballot.

* Numbers of postal ballot received so far.

* Number of absentee voters in the constituency.

* Number of votes casted by absentee voters.

* Number of election duty certificates issued.

* Number of election duty certificates received.

Further, it requested the ECI to direct all Returning Officers to count the postal ballots, and the ballots collected from homes of the absentee voters and election duty certificates before counting of EVMs is taken up. It also suggested furnishing the names and details of the officials detailed for issue, receiving and collection of such postal ballot papers, ballots from home etc. to all the contesting candidates.

Lastly, the 'Mahajoot' has urged the ECI to issue a direction to all the Returning Officers that unless one round is finished and recorded in writing, next round of machines cannot be opened for counting.
