GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court said that "it is incumbent upon the Assam Government to create facilities like ICU beds, oxygen beds and ventilator beds for Covid-19 patients even at district hospitals that have no medical colleges in a phase-wise manner."
Hearing a PIL (31/2021) filed by Advocates Association for Indigenous Rights of Assamese and one other, the Court said: "…at eight places – Dibrugarh, Guwahati, Silchar, Jorhat, Barpeta, Tezpur, Diphu and Lakhimpur medical colleges and attached hospitals have ICU beds, oxygen beds and ventilator beds etc."
Hearing the petition, the division bench comprising Chief Justice RM Chhaya and Justice Soumitra Saikia said, "As assured by the Advocate General D Saikia, the State Government shall endeavour to create such facilities in each of the 34 districts, and more particularly in the districts where medical colleges have not been established and even in new districts which, according to the Advocate General, have been created recently. We hope and trust that the Government shall take the same on a serious note and create all medical facilities for complete treatment of COVID-19 patients in those districts latest by 31.03.2023."
