GUWAHATI: Two people who were below the under-construction Maligaon flyover, were injured on Tuesday after an iron shuttering slab fell on them. Two vehicles were also damaged.

The injured persons have been identified as Nayan Das and Jitu Das. After the incident, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Guwahati Commissioner of Police Diganta Borah and Kamrup (metro) Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha visited the incident site. The Chief Minister also visited the hospital where the injured persons have been admitted and took stock of their condition after talking to the attending doctors. He also asked the doctors to provide best of the treatment to the injured. He held discussion with the senior officers of the PWD. He also held discussion with the Commissioner of Police Diganta Barah and Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha and said that for the safety of the people at large, either of the two sides of the road on which the flyover is being built will remain closed for traffic from 10 PM to 6 AM. He also said that a traffic management plan will be worked out for the convenience of the commuters.

The incident has sparked sharp reactions among people. State Congress secretary and All India Professionals’ Congress ( AIPC) Assam unit president Gauravv Somani urged the Assam Government and Kamrup (M) district administration to temporarily stop construction work of the Maligaon flyover during the period of the AmbubachiMela taking into consideration citizens’ safety. “Any incident at that time can be fatal. No safety gears and construction protocol are being followed as seen and observed from the various incidents that have happened during last few days wherein people are injured and have lost life too,” he said.
