GUWAHATI: The city witnessed the 16th anniversary of the marriage that was held between a sacred fig and banyan tree back in 2004 in the TV tower area of Bhangagarh near Guwahati Medical College & Hospital. Though it started as per the suggestion of a saint, Debakanta Das and his family have been celebrating the anniversary of these two plants for the last 15 years with the motto: people will be there as long as trees will be with us.
Like the previous years, this year as well the anniversary was celebrated with religious functions including Nagara Naam in Mahesh and Tridhari Ashram that was formed after the religious marriage between these two plants.
Das said, “As per the suggestion of a saint I started the ritual. The trees are now 32 years old and I got them married when the plants aged 16 years. Since then we have been celebrating each anniversary with the aim to save trees.” This year, the organizers had taken an initiative to not use any plastic material in the function, hence they used all the bio degradable materials that includes banana leaves, garlands etc to decorate it instead of using readymade plastic made decorative items.
