GUWAHATI: The political turmoil within the Cotton University Students' Union (CUSU) continued unabated on Sunday with the majority of members of the union announcing that they would boycott both general secretary Abhishek Mahanta and president Niyor Deka because the duo joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In a statement, the CUSU members said that the general secretary and president will not be invited to any event organized by the other office-bearers. The other CUSU members will also boycott any event organized by Mahanta and Deka, the statement added.
Moreover, the statement said that henceforth no event will be organized under the banner of CUSU 2022-2023, but only on sectional lines.
Meanwhile, former inmates of the Swahid Mozammil Haque (SMH) Hostel of the Cotton University have issued a statement on social media, condemning Niyor Deka's act of joining a political party. "Everyone has the right to join a political party in a democratic country. We don't have a disagreement there. But we feel that Niyor Deka, who promised to speak out in favour of Cotton and the nation independently without being a member of any organization or political party till the end of his term as president during the elections, has betrayed everyone by joining the BJP," the statement said.
The statement appealed to all Cottonians "to be vigilant and strive in the interest of keeping the politics of values and healthy democratic tradition intact."
