GUWAHATI: Assam' Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Bora has announced the names of artistes selected for the various cultural awards on the occasion of Silpi Divas, the birth anniversary of Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla.

The Minister announced that Silpi award 2023 will be conferred on eminent musicians Rajen Gohain and Pokhila Lekthepi, while the Natasurya Phani Sarma Award 2022 will be conferred on prominent actor Pranjal Saikia. The Dr Bhabendra Nath Saikia Award 2022 will be conferred on another eminent actor, Arun Nath, while the Biju Phukan Award 2022 will be conferred on noted filmmaker Samarendra Narayan Deb. The Bhimbor Deori Award 2022 will be conferred on noted writer Mileshwar Patar, the Cultural Affairs Minister informed. Bora further said that the Silpi Pension of Rs 8,000 per month will be given to 50 artistes for their distinguished contribution in the field of art and culture. Moreover, he also announced the names of the recipients of the Barxik Silpi Sanman, as also the One Time Special Pension to families of 152 deceased artistes of Rs 50,000 each for the year 2022-23.

The awards will be presented on Tuesday at a function to be held at the Assam Agricultural University (AAU) campus in Jorhat. Bora described the artistes of the State as the custodians of Assam's rich cultural heritage and identity. He said that the artistes' constant endeavour to showcase Assam's varied cultural traditions contributes immensely towards their preservation and promulgation.
