GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has allowed reopening of authorized mutton shops in the city from Saturday. The decision was taken after a meeting was held between the GMC and the Greater Guwahati Qureshi Meat Shoppers' Association (GGQMSA) on Wednesday.

The GMC agreed to the GGQMSA's appeal to sell mutton at the price of Rs 700 per kg, said president of the association Muslem Ali. He added that the GMC has permitted them to buy meat from the slaughter house at a price of Rs 620. If the sellers choose to slaughter goat at the designated slaughter house then they will be charged Rs 60 for each animal, he underlined.

It is to be mentioned that around two months back the GMC had evicted the Goat Market in Bharalu. The market was proposed to be shifted near to Khanapara Slaughter House but the GGQMSA opposed the decision. But now the association has agreed to the terms of the GMC and the market will be reopened near the slaughter house in Khanapara from Saturday.

During the lockdown period, all the mutton shops in the city were ordered to be closed. During the lockdown, the Assam Live Stock and Poultry Corporation Limited took the decision to sell mutton through authorized vehicles at a price of Rs 650 per kg. After the lockdown norms were relaxed in the fourth phase, the mutton sellers demanded the GMC to discontinue the selling of meat through vans and allow reopening of shops. The association alleged that, the authorized vans were selling mutton in unhygienic places and were charging Rs 700 per kg. The association proposed that they will slaughter goats at authorized slaughter houses and demanded that the price of mutton should be hiked to Rs 700 per kg instead of Rs 650. Their demands were finally met at the Wednesday's meeting with the GMC.

Meanwhile, GMC Veterinary Department officer Dr Pradeep Medhi urged the people to buy only meat which has stamp of Khanapara Slaughter House. In Guwahati there are a total of 168 licensed mutton shops. In the meeting, it was decided that the shops which are operating without license will be evicted in the days ahead.
