GUWAHATI: Chairman of the Assam Livestock and Poultry Corporation Ltd. (ALPCL) Manoj Saikia said that soon mutton will be made available for the city dwellers.

Addressing the press here on Friday, Saikia said that the prices for the same have been fixed Rs.650 per Kilogram. He added that the government is concerned about the nutritional requirements of the people and proper initiatives have been taken to make hygienic meat available for the Guwahatians.

He said, “Earlier we have had taken initiative to make egg and chicken available. However, we have received complaints regarding the prices. Citizens have stated that the vendors are taking as much price as they want from the consumers by violating the district administration’s guidelines. Now, we are concerned about this matter and we will be bound to take strict actions against those who are not following the orders. The price for eggs has been fixed at Rs. 140 per plate. Likewise, dressed chicken is fixed at Rs. 240 per kg. Action will be taken against anyone taking more price than the fixed rate decided by the administration”

It is to be noted that the meat sellers will not be permitted to sell mutton from their own. Instead they will have to collect meat from the slaughter house situated in Khanapara. Saikia said, “This is because we are concerned about the nutritional need of the people. We want that everything that we eat must be hygienic and nutritional so as to tackle the current critical situation. So, we have decided a few guidelines for the safe supply of healthy meat to the consumers.”

He appealed the vendors to not overcharge from the people at this crucial time. Saikia said that three mobile numbers have already been launched and the corporation will take action against vendors who harass the consumers.

He further expressed his concern over the matter of providing meat at other places. He added, “Initiatives should be taken to make fish and meat available in other places of the state as the Central government guideline is not meant only for Guwahati city. However, there should be no confusion regarding the price. Due to transportation, the prices may hike in other parts of the state.”
