GUWAHATI: Mystery shrouds the recovery of a body from a house on Monday at Lakshminagar, Chinmoy Path in the city.

The deceased has been identified as Milan Chetri. He had been living in the city for the last 35 years in various rented houses.

His body was recovered from the rented house of one Ataur Rahman. Neighbours got a foul smell from the house and informed the police.

The police found the house locked from outside. Forensic and Crime Investigation Department (CID) teams were called. On breaking open the door, police found the body of Milan Chetri. The body had been partially decomposed. Police sources said that a liquor bottle and a glass of liquor were found near the body. A dao was also found in the house but there were no blood traces on it.

Neighbours said that they last saw Milan Chetri on November 19. He ran a small roadside shop and also took up odd jobs as a painter to make ends meet.

He has a sister in Shillong who informed that Chetri hailed from Malda in West Bengal. Local people also said that his present wife and children had left the house two months ago following a dispute between the husband and wife.

Police said that only after the post-mortem report comes they will be able to say whether it was a suicide or a murder. Investigation is on.
