GUWAHATI: The State government has published a document to govern the performance of government schools. The School Rule Book, prepared in sync with NEP-2020 (National Education Policy-2020) and approved by the State Cabinet recently, has laid much emphasis on a green campus as well as proper interaction between the teachers and parents. The School Rule Book also sets to establish the parents of the students of the institution as essential parts of the education system. It has made it compulsory for at least three parents-teachers meets every year and at least one visit to the student’s home by the class teacher.

In order to increase the understanding between the schools and the parents of the students, the School Rule Book has made way for compulsory parent-teacher meetings. Parents and guardians must not take an active part in the education quality as well as develop the school to provide better education to the students. It also mentioned that the parents must take serious concerns regarding the working of the schools towards the interest of their children.

Schools must conduct three mandatory guardian meetings in every academic session and the participation of the parents or guardians of the students must be made compulsory and the schools should encourage the parents to take part in the same. A proceedings book must be maintained regarding these guardian meetings and all the minutes of these meetings must be noted in this book. Some key details have been given regarding the first such meeting between guardians and teachers. These include the reading of the relevant paragraphs of the School Rule Book to the teachers. They must also be briefed about all government schemes including Free Admission, Mid-Day Meal, Free Text Books, Free Uniform, Arohan, Pre-Matric Scholarships, Post-Matric Scholarships, Minority Girl Students Scholarships, Scholarships to SC/ST/OBC students, Mission Bhumiputra, Gunutsav, Bicycle grants to students of Class-IX, Anundoram Borooah Award, Banikanta Kakoti Award etc. Guardians must also be briefed about the academic calendar and the course curriculum as well as the extra-curricular activities and events and any specific decisions taken by the school management committee. They must also be briefed about the etiquette, manners and behaviour to be followed on the school premises and what corrective measures will be taken if they are not followed and the Vidyanjali initiative.

In the second and third meetings of the education session, the parents or guardians must be informed regarding the performance of the students in the examinations as well as the measures taken towards the improvement of the conditions. Attendance and punctuality of the students must also be discussed along with any suggestions or feedback. If the teachers discover any special talent in the students, they must discuss the same with the guardians in order to ensure that these are proceeded with. A special Guardian Meeting must be held one month before the Gunotsav to explain the process and the expected role of the guardians.

The School Rule Book also had provisions for teachers to visit the home of the students. The Class Teachers in particular must visit the homes for the following purposes. To develop a cordial relationship with the child’s family and to ensure them that the school is taking ample care of their child. They will also discuss with the parents regarding the performance of the students in the examinations as well as in regular classes and the steps taken towards improvement. Other key issues to be discussed during these visits include attendance and punctuality as well as the homework given to the students. The teachers will also appreciate the talents of the students and encourage them towards improvement and understand the home situation during these meetings and plan accordingly.
