Balipara Foundation awards
GUWAHATI: Following the 4-day-long one-of-a-kind virtual edition of the 8th Eastern Himalayan Naturenomics™ Forum 2020 that brought together global leaders and experts to discuss 'Ecology is Economy', Balipara Foundation presented the 8th edition of its awards.
The 8th Balipara Foundation Awards recognized the extraordinary visionaries of the Eastern Himalayas and their indomitable contribution, who continue to live in harmony with nature and adopt sustainable methods for greening the economy.
The 8th Rabindranath Barthakur Memorial Lecture was delivered by renowned Indian historian and author Rudrangshu Mukherjee, taking the historical view on 'Ecology is Economy' and the need to re-recognize how integral ecology is to economy. "You cannot completely ignore nature and destroy nature," he said. "There has to be a balance of some kind between development and the sustenance of nature. This has not become a movement, a campaign, on how we strike this balance and the steps we take to maintain this balance."
This year's international award was given to Tin Tin Saw from Myanmar, who started community forestry in her village to stop illegal logging and mining for construction. The national Lifetime Service Award went to Dr. Parimal Chandra Bhattacharjee, a respected academic and a retired Professor of Gauhati University, Assam. He pioneered many wetland studies, primatology and biodiversity studies across north-east India, a press release said.
