National Science Day celebrated in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: The Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, celebrated National Science Day on Monday at the institute's premises at Paschim Boragaon here under the Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav celebrations, stated a press release.

The theme for the National Science Day for this year was 'Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for Sustainable Future'.

At the outset, Prof Ashis K Mukherjee, Director, IASST offered floral tribute to the statue of Sir CV Raman and stated that Sir Raman and other great Indian scientists had contributed significantly to propagating the true spirit of science in India. In his inaugural address, Mukherjee stated that science is an integral part of Indian culture, and since the dawn of civilization, India has contributed significantly in every sphere of science. He emphasized that the empowerment of women and the weaker section of society in science and technology is an essential approach for strong nation-building. He applauded the endeavours of DST and IASST to boost science and technology at multiple levels through various schemes to build a Golden India.

Motivational and inspirational talks were also delivered by two eminent scholars, Prof Nashreen S Islam, Department of Chemical Sciences, and Prof Nayandeep Deka Baruah, Department of Mathematical Sciences from Tezpur University.

IASST organized various events, such as poster presentations, popular science story writing competitions, and science quiz competitions among the research scholars and staff of IASST. To encourage scientific temper, scientists of IASST demonstrated various scientific concepts through a virtual laboratory visit and the programme was attended by more than 300 students of Class IX and Class X from different schools of Assam.

Mukherjee distributed the cash prizes and certificates to the winners of various competitions.

Meanwhile, according to another press release, a webinar was organized by Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati to mark National Science Day.

Dr Bharati Dutta, Head & Associate Professor (Retd), Department of Geography, DHSK College, Dibrugarh delivered special lecture on the topic 'Environmental Issues: Challenges and Remedies'.

Dr Sanjay O'Neill Shaw, welcomed all the attendees and briefed them about the importance of National Science Day.
