Nationalist Congress Party names candidates for Assam polls

GUWAHATI: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Saturday named its candidates' list for the three phases of the Assam Legislative Assembly election at Lakhidhar Borah Khetra. The party will field candidates for nine constituencies in the upcoming poll.

Speaking at a press meet NCP State president Dhirendra Dev Adhikari announced that for the first phase they will field in five candidates in constituencies, in the second phase one constituency and in the third phase in three constituencies.

Addressing a press meet Adhikari claimed, "Through cheap politics the Congress is trying to make Assamese people fool. If the Congress really wants to do something good for Assam they could have done it during their 15 years of rule in Assam."

"Because of the Congress today the saffron party has destroyed the democratic foundation of Assam," Adhikari added.

Adhikari further said, "Today the people of Assam need job, not one-time financial assistance by the government. The government is providing financial assistance to the people but on the other hand they are increasing the prices of petrol-diesel, gas cylinder and other essential commodities."

The constituencies and candidates for the first phase are- Bokakhat: Mridul Saikia; Mahmara: Biman Baruah; Sivasagar: Ajit Hazarikia; Naoboicha: Deepak Saikia; Tinsukia: Robin Chandra Kachari. For second phase- Hailakandi: Haji Jilkadar Ali Barbhuiya. For third phase- Goalpara East: Mohammad Kafiuddin Ahmed; South Salmara: Jenat Mullah, and Dispur: Hridayananda Gogoi.

On the other hand, the party promised to stop privatization and to revive the Jagiroad and Cachar paper mills, creating a united and secular society against religious polarization and communal politics, to scientifically solve the problems of flood and erosion and to provide permanent settlement to the homeless people, developing Assam by solving the problem of Foreigner and updation of NRC based on Assam Accord and keeping CAA outside the purview of the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, to reduce the price of life-saving drugs, petrol-diesel, gas cylinder and the materials related to construction, to give up the move for privatization of power distribution company, besides putting on hold hike in power tariff and improving rural electrification.
