'Nature Conservation Day' at Kendriya Vidyalaya Khanapara held

GUWAHATI: On the occasion of 'World Nature Conservation Day', a mass-plantation drive was organized by the National Green Corps-ECO CLUB of Kendriya Vidyalaya Khanapara (KVK). It is to be mentioned that KVK has been included in the Eco Club network recently on July 19, 2021, in an online opening event.

The plantation programme was started with the welcome address by Hibah Ihsan Muhammad, Green Captain of the ECO CLUB. In her address, she has noted that World Nature Conservation Day recognizes that a healthy environment is a foundation for a stable and productive society and ensure the well-being of present and future generations. Further, she expressed concern over Climate Change; and she pleaded for collective action by Government, Civil Society and Citizens- individually, institutionally, and collectively. She quoted the words of former US President Barak Obama, "We are the first generation to feel the effect of Climate Change and the last generation who can do something about it". She thanked ASTEC and Environment & Forest Department of Government of Assam for extending all help in opening the club and for the plantation programme.

The function was graced by Kimnei Changsan, Director, Assam Science, Technology & Environment Council (ASTEC), Government of Assam, Binod Payeng, DFO Social Forestry, Guwahati, Dr Jaideep Baruah, Head i/c, Environment Division, ASTEC; Scientific Officer & State Nodal Officer of NGC programme in Assam, Dr Chandra Barooah; ACF Mrigen Baruah; Range Officer Dalim Das; K.V. Khanapara Principal Dr Sanjay Kumar, KVK Vice-Principal Babu Ram and KVK Eco Club teacher in charge, Navaneeta Bhattacharyya.

AFS, DFO Social Forestry, Guwahati, Binod Payeng in his address as the 'Guest of Honour', congratulated the ECO club of KVK for the initiative and exhorted the importance of nature's conservation. He insisted the children undertake plantation activities and assured help from his department in all future programmes of the Eco Club.

During the programme, more than 100 coconut saplings and also of other ecologically important plant species were planted by all the invitees, ECO club members and teachers of the Vidyalaya across the school premises.

Vice Green Captain of ECO club, Avishka Bhattacharya extended the vote of thanks to all the invitees.
