GUWAHATI: The North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC) under the Ministry of DoNER, Government of India, had undertaken Geographical Indication (GI) certification of 13 products of the north-eastern region. These commodities are – Arunachal Orange, Mizo Chilli, Kachai Lemon, Tripura Queen Pineapple, Khasi Mandarin, Tezpur Litchi, Sikkim Large Cardamom, Karbi Anglong Ginger, Naga Tree Tomato, ‘Chak-Hao’ Black Rice, Memang Narang, Dalle Khursani, and Naga Sweet Cucumber.
In continuation to NERAMAC’s endeavors towards GI initiatives, a Geographical Indication (GI) awareness seminar-cum-exhibition was held on Tuesday in Guwahati. The main focus of the event was to user authorize 800 north-eastern region farmers/ entrepreneurs to use GI tagging of NERAMAC processed certifications. The programme was graced by State Agriculture Minister Atul Bora. Around 50 farmers from Tezpur and Nalbari also attended the event.
While welcoming the gathering, Commodore Rajiv Ashok (retd), Managing Director of NERAMAC said that the GI initiative is a significant step towards promoting and protecting the traditional agricultural practices and products of the NER region. The initiative will provide recognition to the unique qualities and reputation of NER agricultural products and protect them from misuse and imitation. He explained how the authorization process of farmers would enhance the competitiveness of NER farmers in domestic and international markets and create opportunities for increased income and livelihood.
Speaking to the occasion, Atul Bora said that GI initiative is part of the Govenment of India’s broader efforts to promote sustainable agriculture, protect the rights of farmers, and enhance the country’s agricultural exports, stated a press release.
