GUWAHATI: In view of the rising water levels of the Brahmaputra River, the Inland Water Transport Department has decided to restrict the movement of ferries between the north and south banks of the river in Guwahati. Ferries will now be allowed to ply only between the morning and 6:30 p.m. This restriction applies to all departmental vessels operating in the region.

Officials with the department mentioned that large amounts of debris, including trees and logs, come floating during the monsoons on the river. While these are comparatively easier to navigate during the day because of good visibility, the same cannot be said during the night. That is why nighttime services have been halted. They also mentioned that the services will be resumed when the water level subsides, while the daytime ferries might also be stopped if the water level rises beyond a particular level.
