No compromise on report of high-level committee: AASU

GUWAHATI: The AASU (All Assam Students' Union) has condemned the State government's statement on constitutional safeguards as spelt out in the Assam Accord and cautioned that it won't go for any compromise on the report of the high-level committee.

In a statement issued to the media on Thursday, AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath said, "Not being able to submit the report to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Chairman of the committee Justice BK Sarma had to submit it to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Receiving the report, Sonowal did assure that the report would soon be sent to the MHA.

"It was kept a secret if the report was at the Centre or Dispur. Of late, it came to light on the floor of the Parliament that the report has all along been at Dispur.

"The statement made by the State government on the report of the high-level committee of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord smacks of irresponsibility on the part of the Chief Minister. He dared not send the report to New Delhi and let it gather dusts at Dispur.

"The Clause VI of the Accord has much to do with its Clause V. Without doing anything on Clause V of the Accord in the past five years, the Chief Minister has insulted the people of the State. Now he's now adding insult to injury by not doing anything worthwhile on Clause VI of the Accord.

"Constitutional safeguards need a few amendments to the Constitution. The report of the high-level committee has spelt out articles and their sections that need to be amended. However, the Chief Minister hasn't gone through the report and he's ignorant of the matter. Maintaining a safe distance from the Report, the Chief Minister entrusted some others to decide the fate of the Report."
