No meeting of sub-committee on Assam Accord for 7 months

GUWAHATI: The sub-committee constituted by the Assam Government to examine and prepare a framework for the implementation of all clauses of the Assam Accord, has not held any meeting since May last year.

The sub-committee was supposed to examine implementation of the Assam Accord in general with special emphasis on Clause-6 (High Level Committee Report), Clause-7, Clause-9 and Clause-10 along with updation of National Register of Citizens, issues of flood and erosion, rehabilitation of martyrs' families and victims of the Assam Agitation and also in regard to the various problems faced by the state of Assam. The sub-committee comprised three ministers of the State and representatives of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU). The sub-committee was constituted on October, 2021 and its tenure ended on December, 2021. The last meeting of the sub-committee was held on May, 2022. In the last meeting it was decided that the sub-committee should meet every 15 days but this did not happen.

AASU general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah, while talking to The Sentinel, said, "This sub-committee has a lot of importance. I don't know why the tenure of the sub-committee was not extended. There has also been no meeting for the past few months. If the government is sincere about implementing the clauses of the Assam Accord, the tenure of the sub-committee should be extended."
