GUWAHATI: The North East Progressive Pig Farmers' Association (NEPPFA) on Wednesday highlighted the financial loss that they incurred in the piggery sector in the last one year.

Addressing a press meet at the Guwahati Press Club, NEPPFA president Monoj Kumar Basumatary stated, "The commercial and the small farmers have incurred huge losses in the last one year due to the COVID-19-induced lockdown, followed by the African Swine Fever in Assam."

The Association demanded the Government a relief package for the commercial farmers and a scheme to help the distressed small farmers. They also demanded a special package for the farmers whose pigs had died due to the African Swine Fever. Basumatary underlined that under the National Livestock Mission there is a provision of insurance for subsidies but till date it has not been implemented by the Government.

Further, the Association alleged that in spite of the ban imposed by the Gauhati High Court on the transportation of pigs from other States, daily 15-20 truckloads with pigs are entering the State through Srirampur Gate in Dhubri.
