Noted Assamese litterateur Sashi Sharma passes away at 89 in Nalbari

GUWAHATI: Noted Assamese litterateur, thinker and educationist Sashi Sharma passed away at his residence in Nalbari on Tuesday night.

He was 89 years old and his body was donated posthumously to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Thursday. He is survived by his wife and daughter. Sharma was born on 3rd October1931 in Janigog village in Nalbari. He started his career in 1961 as a professor at the Nalbari College’s Assamese Department and retired in 1993.

The scholar was honoured with several awards during his lifetime and has written numerous books on Assamese literature. In 1968, he was honoured with the “Soviet Nehru Award” and the Asam Xahitya Xabha also conferred him with the Sitanath Brahma Choudhury Award.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed grief on his demise and stated, “Everyone will remember Sashi Sharma’s for his immense contribution in the field of literature, education, social and intellectual. His death is a loss for the literature and education of the state.” Assam Publication Board also gave condolences about his demise. BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) Assam President Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Minister of Transport, Industry and Commerce Chandra Mohan Patowary also gave tribute to Sharma.

The last rites of Late Sharma’s body were performed with full honours at the Nalbari Shaheed Bhawan on Thursday. It was later brought to Guwahati and taken to CPI (M) Assam State Office in Hedayetpur following which it was sent to GMCH.
