Notorious thief shot at while trying to flee by Azara Police

GUWAHATI: A notorious thief sustained injury after police shot at him while he was trying to flee from police custody. The incident took place on Saturday night. Notorious thief Akashdeep Singh was shot in the leg by Azara Police when he tried to flee from police custody. He is currently undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

On Friday, Azara Police had arrested Akashdeep Singh, son of Rajesh Singh; and Binay Das Yadav, son of Birender Das Yadav, both residents of Jalpaiguri, at KRB Road under Bharalumukh PS. A stolen bike was recovered from them. The Azara Police registered a case (no. 515/21 u/s 379 IPC).

According to police, after interrogation, Akashdeep Singh agreed to lead the police to recover other stolen bikes and other items. On Saturday night, while leading the police party to Kuhabori area under Azara PS, Akashdeep Singh tried to flee from police custody by snatching the carbine of on-duty police personnel Lohit Saikia. To stop the accused from fleeing, one round was fired on his leg. The injured accused was referred to GMCH after preliminary treatment at Azara PHC.
